Influencing the Future Health Professional Work Force

In 1992, Becky Bernard served as an AHEC Summer Health Career Camps counselor.

Dr. Bernard is now a pediatrician treating children in Immokalee.

AHEC targets some of its resources to programs that generate interest in health careers, particularly among minority and disadvantaged youth. Training and service-oriented programs that expose health professions students to career opportunities in underserved communities are also a priority.

AHEC accomplishes the first of these objectives through health career awareness programs, and by offering enrichment activities to select students. These activities include health professional shadowing, academic preparatory programs and health career camps, among others. Activities are designed to build students' self-esteem, prepare them for college, and present them with potential career opportunities. The second objective is accomplished through AHEC's extensive community-based training programs conducted in underserved communities throughout Florida.
